Another month gone from 2022 and only one left!! If you’re participating in the Goodreads Reading Challenge, you better read fast! I actually surpassed my goal! Yay! I read 7 books this month! Most of them were part of a series but I had a couple stand-alones. Let’s get to the November 2022 Book Review!

Lightening Lingers
Last month I read Beautiful Storm, the first book by Barbara Freethy in the Lightening Strikes series. Lightening Lingers is the second book in the series. This book is a continuation of the first book and follows the brother of the main character in the first book. His high school girlfriend’s brother goes missing in Mexico and as a pilot, she enlists him to fly her to Mexico to help find him. After the plane goes down, they find themselves needing to rely on each other and set aside any past differences to survive.
This book was about as believable as the first one (not very…), but it still kept me entertained. I read this book quickly but honestly, not much more to say about it.
I gave this book 3 out of 5 stars.
Summer Rain
Summer Rain is the third and final book in the Lightening Strikes series. The book follows the youngest sister, who holds the key to her father’s disappearance. She meets a journalist whose mother was killed in a very similar to way to her father. Based on the similarities, they beging investigating. Clearly someone doesn’t want them to investigate and her life becomes endangered, which just spurs them on even further. They work on solving the mystery of these two seemingly linked events and naturally, fall in love.
This book was a good conclusion to the series. It was the most realistic and I enjoyed it the most. This book put together a lot of questions that were brought up during the other two books. The epilogue tied back in the other two characters and was a satisfying ending.
I gave this book 3.5 out of 5 stars.
Shadow Island Series
I found this series on Kindle Unlimited, based on recommendations from previously read books. I would describe these books as a mix between J.D. Robb and Mary Higgins Clark. It’s a bit graphic but is a great mystery series. This series follows former FBI special agent, Rebecca West. She wants to eliminate stress in her life, so she rents a beach house in her childhood vacation spot. However, on her first day on the island, the Sheriff approaches her about a missing teenager and a very understaffed department.
The first book, Shadow’s Secret, follows Rebecca as she searches to find the missing teenager and ultimately who killed her. It also introduces an underground scene known as the Yacht Club that appears untouchable by law enforcement and unspeakable by the locals. Rebecca has to determine if the Yacht Club has anything to do with the murder and if not, determine if she is able to ignore the secrets surrounding the Yacht Club.
The second book, Shadow’s Captive, falls right on the heels of Shadow’s Secret. Rebecca had no intention on staying on in the Sheriff’s department, but through a series of events, finds herself in charge of the department. As she’s trying to find a way to resign, another child goes missing, and Rebecca needs this one to go better than the last. This book mainly focuses on the missing child and Rebecca trying to tread lightly as head of a fractured Sheriff’s department.
The third book in the series, Shadow’s Deadline, is about a man who is found murdered and all signs are pointing to the elusive Yacht Club. Things take a turn when another person is found dead and Rebecca gets concerned about a serial killer on her island. Hitting road blocks at all corners, Rebecca has to find a way to break through the barriers of the Yacht Club and start getting answers.
I enjoyed this series and read through the books pretty quickly. I enjoyed the WhoDunIt aspect of these books. While there are currently only 3 books in the series, there are 5 more slated to come out in the future. I will definitely be reading these books and looking forward to see Rebecca’s journey.
I gave all three books 4 out of 5 stars.
Skandar and the Unicorn Thief
Skandar and the Unicorn Thief follows Skandar and his desire to be a unicorn rider. Since I don’t want to give anything away, here’s the description on the back of the book: “Skandar is thrust into a world of epic sky battles, dangerous clashes with wild unicorns, and rumors of a shadowy villain amassing a unicorn army. And the closer Skandar grows to his newfound friends and community of riders, the harder it becomes to keep his secrets—especially when he discovers their lives may all be in graver danger than he ever imagined.”
When I was in Arizona, I mentioned to a coworker that I didn’t have a book to read on the flight back to Colorado and she recommended this to me. Unfortunately, the library had a long wait to I didn’t get to read it until recently. But I’m so glad she recommended it, because it was so entertaining! It definitely gave Harry Potter vibes and I cannot wait for the next book to come out.
I gave this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.
The Final Hunt
The Final Hunt is a book about a women whose husband is presumed dead after a bear attack three months earlier. While reminiscing in their cabin, she finds a flash drive that changes her world. She discovers that her husband is the serial killer that had been terrorizing Seattle for years. Secrets keep coming out and the reader begins to question whether she is a completely innocent bystander or an accomplice to her husband’s schemes.
This book was very different than the other books that I read this month. It was another Kindle Unlimited recommendation. It was one of those books where you don’t really know who you are routing for. While it wasn’t a “shock” ending, it had unexpected moments and was definitely a page-turner.
I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars.
Final Thoughts
I felt like I had a pretty good mix of books this month. Skandar and the Unicorn Thief was definitely my favorite. I will say though, after a dark month of reading, I needed something lighthearted, and it is not disappointing… Hope to see you back for December’s review! Let me know if you have any good recommendations. 🙂
